DOS용 VIA AC97 Driver

도스머신으로 펜티엄1~3을 구하기 힘들 경우 저렴한 펜티엄4 본체를 도스머신으로 사용할 수도 있습니다. 대신 도스를 지원하는 사운드카드를 새로 장착하기가 쉽지 않은데요. 메인보드에 AC97 사운드칩셋이 있는 본체를 구하면 됩니다. 펜티엄4 때는 내장 사운드 칩셋이 거의 AC97이었으니 구하기 쉽습니다.

당시의 ASUS 메인보드는 전부 ADI 사운드칩셋을 사용했기 때문에 다른 메인보드를 선택하세요. ADI는 윈도우XP를 사용할 당시에도 각 칩셋숫자에 따라 달라서 드라이버 설치가 너무 어려웠기 때문에(욕하고 싶을 정도) ADI용 도스버전은 알아볼 생각도 하지 않았습니다.

 

이 파일을 도스에서 사용하기 위해서는 메인보드의 CMOS 설정에 Sound Blaster가 있어야 합니다.

그러니까 CMOS 들어가서 Sound Blaster를 끄거나 켤 수 있는 옵션이 있는데 이게 사운드블라스터 호환모드인 셈이지요.

아무튼 사운드 블라스터 옵션이 없으면 사용이 안됩니다.

 

사운드블라스터 옵션은 2010년 이후에도 본적이 있는 것 같습니다. 775 CPU 사용할 때네요. 메인보드에 사운드 블라스터가 달려 있다니 고가형이라고만 생각했었는데 잘못 알고 있었네요. 고가형도 아니었습니다.

만약 이런 메인보드를 찾게 되면 고사양의 게임용 도스머신이 될 겁니다. MS DOS가 멈추지 않고 설치만 된다면요.

ISA단자 달린 펜티엄4 423핀 메인보드가 지금껏 제가 본 도스머신 중 최고사양이었는데요.

주변에 버려진 컴퓨터가 있다면 한번 눈여겨 보세요~

 

당시에는 신경 쓴 사람이 없었기 때문에 제대로 된 정보가 남아있지 않습니다. 기억의 왜곡이 이렇게 무섭습니다. ㅎㅎ

 

구글링 해 보니 생각보다 더 구형 컴퓨터에서 가능하다는데요. 1999~2001년 정도에 출시된 VT82C686A 칩셋의 메인보드만 가능합니다. 사양은 펜티엄 3 정도 되겠네요.

Asus K7M에서 된다고 하네요. 그냥 사운드블라스터 카드를 구하는게 쉽겠네요.

 

지원되는지 확인하는 방법은 바이오스 들어가서 Sound Blaster Pro 선택하는게 있으면 가능, 없으면 땡.

혹시 눈에 띌지 모르니 다시한번 강조합니다. ㅎㅎ

 

그럼 VIA 홈페이지에서 DOS 드라이버를 다운로드 해 봅시다. 언제부터인지 모르지만 공식홈페이지 주소가 변경되었네요.

1. VIA Driver Download Portal 을 방문합니다.

 

2. 다음과 같이 선택해 줍니다.

Step 1에는 Other

Step 2에는 DOS

Step 3에는 Audio를 선택하구요.

마지막으로 Step 4.에서 VIA AC97을 선택하면 해당되는 드라이버 목록으로 이동됩니다.

 

3. 그럼 다운로드 가능한 리스트가 쭉 뜹니다. 다운로드 가능한 파일 중에서 다음 파일에만 도스 버전이 포함되어 있습니다.

다른 파일은 윈도우 버전만 들어 있고 도스버전이 들어있지 않더군요.

그중에서도 맨 아래로 내리면 Download version 6.20M 이 있는데 이 버전을 추천합니다.

 

4. Vinyl_AudioCodec_v620b_M.zip을 압축프로그램으로 열어보면

DOS 순으로 선택해서 들어가 줍니다.

DOS 폴더 안의 파일이 세개가 나오는데요. 필요한 파일은 이 세개입니다.

세개의 파일을 따로 압축하여 업로드하였습니다. 일부러 받으러 가려면 귀찮잖아요.

VIA Driver Download Portal에서 여러 칩셋을 선택할 수 있었는데요. 받아서 확인해 보니 결국 도스용은 모두 같은 파일이더군요. 이 파일이 통하지 않으면 칩셋과의 호환성 문제이니 다른 본체를 사용하면 됩니다.

이렇게 사운드 설정을 해주면 버려지는 펜티엄4를 도스머신으로 활용이 가능합니다. 창고에 굴러다니는 펜티엄4 컴퓨터를 발견하면 설치해 보겠습니다.

5)  DOS Sound
  
(a) General Information:

DOS sound can be divided into two classes: 
      1) Waveform sound,such as a Gun shot, knock sound etc. The "Sound Blaster Pro Compatible sound device" hardware is build-in on VIA
      VT82C686A/686B/VT8231 south bridge to support DOS Waveform sound and
      2) Music sound, which is in MIDI format such as background music. VIA supports a software synthesizer to play MIDI format.   
      

(b) In pure DOS environment or "Restart to MS-DOS mode" from Win 9X:
      How to play a DOS game with both Waveform and MIDI sound.
      * For Waveform sound: first enable the Sound Blaster setting in the
        BIOS CMOS setup firstly. Please follow these instructions to enable
        the setting in the BIOS :    
        INTEGRATED PERIPHERALS -> Onboard Legacy Audio (Enabled)
        -> Sound Blaster (Disable -> Enabled)
      * For MIDI music sound: Because the chipset doesn't support MIDI hardware
        synthesizer the user needs to install VIA software synthesizer TSR utility.
        This utility can translate MIDI format to Waveform format.
        To install this utility, please follow this procedure:        
        i)   Run "install.exe" in "\DOS" directory.
        ii)  The program will copy the relative files into the directory
             which you assigned, the default is "C:\VIAUDIO\VIAUDIO.COM".
             Then the program will insert the new line
             "C:\VIAUDIO\VIAUDIO.COM" into the AUTOEXEC.BAT and copy the
             original AUTOEXEC.BAT to AUTOEXEC.VIA.
        iii) Reboot the system when the installation is completed.
        iv)  You can uninstall this TSR utility by deleting the new line from the
             AUTOEXEC.BAT and deleting the file C:\VIAUDIO\VIAUDIO.COM
  
(c) In Windows MS-DOS prompt environment:

* If you install the VxD audio driver: first enable the Sound Blaster setting in the
        BIOS CMOS setup firstly. Please follow these instructions to enable
        the setting in the BIOS :    
        INTEGRATED PERIPHERALS -> Onboard Legacy Audio (Enabled)
        -> Sound Blaster (Disable -> Enabled)
         VxD audio driver will trap the I/O port of the SB Pro compitable device
        to simulate game program I/O access. VIA also supports FM synthesizer
        driver to play DOS game's MIDI music data.
      
* If you install the WDM audio driver:
        i)  For Waveform sound: In WDM architecture, Microsoft provides
            a SB Pro enumeration driver, named sbenum.sys, to simulate
            SBPro behavior for DOS games to play Waveform sound.
        ii) For MIDI music sound: In WDM architecture, Microsoft provides
            a WDM kernal driver named swmidi.sys to play MIDI format music.
        Users should have the setting in DOS games. Wave player is SBPro
        and Music player is General MIDI.
